Balanced Nutrition: Fueling Your Body, Healing Your Life
Summer Reset Series – Week 2: The “B” in BEAMS
Life has a way of testing our energy reserves—grief, pain, fatigue, overwhelm.
And when you're in the thick of it, it’s easy to default to what’s fast and convenient. But I’ve learned—especially in this season—that what you eat can either deplete you or bring you back to life.
Welcome to week two of the Summer Reset Series, where I’m sharing not just nutrition tips, but the deeper why behind how we nourish ourselves when life feels heavy.
🥬 The Real Meaning of “Balanced Nutrition”
Balanced nutrition isn’t about following a perfect meal plan or avoiding carbs.
It’s about this:
Listening to your body. Choosing whole, vibrant foods. And fueling your life—not just your body.
In my book Health BEAMS, I compare food to fuel:
“If you fill a car with the wrong fuel, the engine sputters. The same is true for your body. You need the right blend of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals to function well.”
When you feed yourself with real, living food, your energy shifts. Your mood stabilizes. Your hormones regulate. Your mind clears. And slowly, without forcing it, you begin to feel more like you again.
✈️ A Personal Story: Veggie Wraps, Homemade Bread & a Whole Lot of Love
Recently, I traveled from Hawaii to Utah—during a season of grief, physical pain, and emotional exhaustion. I knew that what I packed for that flight mattered. So the night before, I laid out a large wrap and began loading it with veggies—cucumbers, greens, shredded carrots, sprouts, avocado, a tahini drizzle—so full I could barely fold it. I also wrapped a thick slab of homemade sourdough baguette, made from wheat I grind myself and packed with seeds like chia, flax, and pumpkin. That bread is my travel staple. It’s snack. It’s breakfast. It’s grounding.
As I pulled out my wrap mid-flight—surrounded by airport food and packaged snacks—I felt connected. Clear. Cared for.
That’s what balanced nutrition does. It remembers you, even when you forget yourself.
🚗 Your Body Is a High-Performance Vehicle
In Health BEAMS, I explore the idea of food as fuel with a fuel-grade analogy:
Diesel – Junk foods that wear you down over time
Low-Octane – Seemingly harmless processed foods that leave you sluggish
Mid-Octane – Moderately nourishing foods like nut butters, dried fruit, whole grain breads
High-Octane – Whole, plant-based foods that fuel vitality, energy, and long-term health
Your body runs best on quality fuel. You deserve to feel energized—not just full.
🌈 What Balanced Eating Actually Looks Like
It doesn’t have to be perfect. Just intentional.
A homemade veggie wrap, colorful and satisfying
A handful of edamame or dried mango on the go
Choosing a fresh salad with dinner instead of a fried appetizer
Drinking tea or lemon water instead of soda
Pausing before eating and asking, “What do I need right now?”
Balanced eating isn’t about control. It’s about connection.
